Directions:

For this assignment, a simple photo may be best. Most of the photo should be black and white. Let a small amount of color show through for emphasis. Use the rule of thirds.

1. Take a photo with your phone or camera and load it onto your computer. A simple photo may be best. Most of the photo should be black and white. Let a small amount of color show through for emphasis. Use the rule of thirds.

2. Open it in Photoshop

3. Add a Gradient Map black and white or sepia (or other color) above the background layer.

4. Use the brush tool to let a little color show through.

5. Save as Your name_Gradient Map

6. After opening the photo in Photoshop, add a copy of the background layer. Com + J. 

Be sure your color picker colors are black and white

Click on the adjustments layer icon and select Gradient Map

7. Your document should be grayscale (or black and white)

8. On the new Gradient Map layer, go to brushes and pick a soft brush.
9. Take the flow down to about 10%-50%.
10. Make the brush colors black and white.
11. Use the black brush and paint over the white mask. You will begin to see color from layer 1 appearing. Continue until get what you want.

Note: 

•You may need to adjust brush size and flow as you work.
•Always paint on the white layer mask in the Layers Palette
•If you bring too much color back, change the brush color to white and paint. The color areas you do not want will go away.

1. Create a Photoshop document

Height: 8 inches

Width: 8 inches

Resolution: 200

2. Place one of your water + food color photos in the document. Resize and/or crop it.

3. Copy this layer. COM>J. This should read layer 1 copy.

4. Find another image and place it below layer 1  copy




5. Click on layer 1 copy and make a layer mask.

Paint on the layer mask with a black brush to let color show through

Switch to white if too much shows through

Remember: 

•Use a soft brush

•Change brush size if necessary

•Take the flow down to around 15 or less
