final exam study sheeet

Photography
2019 final exam study sheet

Photography is the science, art and practice of creating durable images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as photographic film, or electronically by means of an image sensor.

The word photography comes from two ancient Greek words: photo, for “light,” and graph, for “drawing.” “Drawing with light” is a way of describing photography.

A photograph can be a portrait, selfie, street scene, still life,  a historical document that is frozen time, a landscape, and much more.

Camera: An optical device for taking photographs, generally consisting of a lightproof enclosure having an opening or aperture with a shuttered lens through which the image of an object is focused and recorded on a photosensitive film, plate, or a sensor in digital photography.

Line: A line is a path left by a moving point. A continuous mark on a surface.

A lens was added to a camera obscura to project a sharply focused image.

A shutter is the part of a camera that controls the length of time that light is allowed to enter the camera

A viewfinder is the part of a camera that allows the photographer to view the image that will be captured when the photo is taken.

Correct exposure is an image that is not too dark and not too light. This is achieved by letting the right amount of light (controlled by aperture) collect on the sensor or film for the right length of time, which is controlled by the how long shutter is open.

To store the images taken by a digital single lens reflex camera, we usually use an SD card

The part of a camera that allows the photographer to view the image that will be captured when the photo is taken is the viewfinder

The part of a camera that controls the amount of light collecting on the sensor or film is
the aperture

The part of a camera that controls the length of time light is collected the sensor or film is
the shutter

Know which aperture opening or f/stop is physically larger or smaller

In this class, photos that are being sent via e-mail should be saved as a JPEG
Know which shutter speed is slower or faster

In this class, we sent an email with the photo included as an attachment

If you were taking a photo of a running dog, and you wanted to stop or freeze the action, your best shutter speed would be a fast shutter speed like 1/500.

In a digital camera, the photographic image is captured by a sensor

Light enters the lens of a camera and is collected on a sensor or or film as long as the shutter is open.

In this class, when you have finished a Photoshop document, it is the best practice to  save it
in your documents folder

When using the rule of thirds, important compositional elements should be placed near the imaginary lines and points and where the lines intersect.

Draw the rule of thirds inside an empty rectangle

Using the DSLR worksheet, label the missing parts of a digital camera.

DSLR stands for Digital Single Lens Reflex

What three photographic terms describe “The Exposure Triangle”?
Aperture, shutter speed and ISO

The lower the ISO number, the less sensitive your camera is to light.

If you use a wide aperture, the depth of field will be shallow.

An aperture of f/2 will produce less depth of field than f/16.

If you want to create a blurry motion image, a good shutter speed would be ½ second.

trash

If all trash is not cleaned up by the end of today, the only class that will be allowed to have food and beverages is my PLT. If there is any trash left behind after then, no food or beverages in any classes.

If you want to cut out the part of a photo around the selection, you should go to Select>Inverse
When you still see the “marching ants”, which means a selection is still active, you should go to
Select>Deselect

The preferred way to eject an SD card from a Mac is to click and hold on the SD card icon on your
desktop, hold, and drag the SD icon to the trash icon at the bottom right of the screen.
When the SD icon disappears, remove it from the computer.

6. After opening the photo in Photoshop, add a copy of the background layer. Com + J.
Be sure your color picker colors are black and white
Click on the adjustments layer icon and select Gradient Map
7. Your document should be grayscale (or black and white)
8. On the new Gradient Map layer, go to brushes and pick a soft brush. Its hardness should be 0
9. Take the flow down to about 10%-50%.
10. Make the brush colors black and white.
11. Use the black brush and paint over the white mask. You will begin to see color from
layer 1 appearing. Continue until get what you want.
If you have too much color showing through, switch to white and paint on the layer mask
